To slightly misquote John Steinbeck, "The best laid plans often can go astray."
It was St. Patrick's Day and I planned on helping myself to a couple car bombs while watching three good local bands at Jerky's, an old bar but new music venue. When I got there, my urge to drink instantly faded, with me only getting one drink to give me something to do before friends arrived; a drink I didn't even want and barely finished.
Katie Lee Hooker opened the show with a jazzy intro before ramming into a set of melodic punk rock and roll. I remembered them being heavier the last time I saw them, but I still enjoyed their catchy melodies and the impressive guitar work of Zach. They did have some heavy and screamy parts, just not as many as I remembered.
The Doosh Bags got the crowd into a frenzy. Their disgustingly lewd songs had a good amount of people dancing and singing along, all the while making sure to point to the various body parts that Kenny Rhule was singing about. His ability to morph his voice from a sing to a deep talk to a growl to a scream is uncanny, and it constasts well with the scream of guitarist Brian Tillinghast. They played a few new songs that I didn't know, and a few songs from albums that I didn't have, but I did enjoy hearing "Pussy" and their cover of Frank Zappa's "Bobby Brown."
Fuzzy from Reason to Fight was pretty drunk when he took the stage, which always makes for an entertaining night. He wasn't as crass as he sometimes can be, but he sang with a great amount of energy, owning the stage while the crowd danced, moshed and sang along. Their street hardcore songs were pretty damn tight, and Fuzzy was the tooth pick sticking out and drawing attention. In addition to their original songs, they covered "No Values" by Black Flag and encored with "Out of Step" by Minor Threat. I'm pretty sure that they kept on playing, but I left after "Out of Step;" a fitting song to leave after a car bomb-less night.
