In a move that I think more national acts should start doing, Against Me! left a slot open for a local band to kick off the show. Get Killed took that spot and played to a packed house that was eager to hear music after waiting in line for an hour. Advertisements said that doors opened at 7, but they didn't end up opening until 8. Sarah and I watied in my relatively warm car listening to music while everyone else froze their ass outside.
Get Killed takes a lot of influences from Black Flag. They also had a couple blast beat songs and a really long song towards the end of their set. The long song had a couple pauses where vocalist Phil said something, though I'm not quite sure what was said. They also had samples in between songs while Phil talked. I think I heard him say something about a cat, but thats all I heard. They played an alright set, though nothing too impressive.
Murder by Death was kind of a disappointment. I was expecting their songs to sounds similar to their album, but, instead they sounded louder and had a more full sound to them. In most cases, that would be a good thing, but it wasn't what I was expecting to hear, so I was thrown off a bit.
They played two new songs that sounded incredible, and I did enjoy songs like "Killbot 2000" and "The Devil in Mexico," but I thought that they'd be better live; though I was wondering how they'd be able to replicate their sound live.
The crowd barely moved, but still seemed to enjoy them. There was a little bit of crowd hand clapping in their second to last song, but they stayed pretty still during Muder by Death's set.
Against Me! took the stage and rocked the house. There was barely a person there that wasn't moving to their style of punk rock. They had so much great energy for the crowd to feed off, which they did and then some. The crowd sung along to almost every word of every old song, and movied around to the new ones, which seemed a bit slower than previous material, but still good stuff. There was a lot of finger pointing, sweat and rafter climbing as the crowd had a much fun listening and singing along as Against Me! did playing.
I was a bit bummed when they play an encore, as I think its a worthless set break and a stupid thing to do overall, but the crowd loved "We Laugh at Danger (And Break all the Rules)," over taking the stage and singing the end verses while drummer Warren played with no guitars or bass. It was a truly great moment.
