Phobia, Backstabbers Inc., Saint Jude, Casket

Summer Camp in Providence, RI

Originally, this show was supposed to have 8, yes count em', 8 bands playing so I obviously wasn't too happy about it considering I have to get up at 6am the next morning with the show starting at 9pm but Brendan McVay, vocalist for the promising new band from Providence St. Jude is a sweet man and I cannot bear to refuse to go. Fortunately, four bands dropped off due to complications with their van or equipment. Relief.

Casket hails from Western Mass., so I had an idea of what they sounded like but was surprised. The guitarist of that band had told my guitarist, booking person for Summer Camp, that he wanted to do a split with my band which is really surprising. They said they were really, really into us. They had a Swarm/Left For Dead, Negative Approach, screamy hardcore Modern Life Is War sound. I really, really enjoyed these guys and have a feeling Hulk Out will get along with this band very much so. They had cheap shirts and free demo's. Their set was five songs long, six counting the last song that everyone wanted them to play again. It had a nice cool riff before the breakdown. I highly recommend this band for anyone who likes those bands and would like to hear the sound together.

St. Jude is, pretty much, a RI all star group of friends from other bands. Members of Shred The Past/Hulk Out, Sin Of Angels, Get Killed/All Those Opposed, Catharsis/Howl and The Nightmare Continues. They had a dark, D-beat sound. Melodic, heavy, crushing at times and entertaining. There's a song called "When The Mosh Calls, You Answer" where Brendan makes one half of the room stay on one side and the other half stay on the other. On the fourth crash of the cymbals, he wanted everyone to wall of death each other. The crowd followed to the song that lasted 7 seconds. If you like Tragedy, listen to St. Jude.

Backstabbers Inc. got added to the show last minute and did not disappoint. Although one of the mic's did not work some of the time during the dual vocal attack, they and the crowd still managed to have a good time. I still prefer Ryan McKenney, their old vocalist but he moved on to do other things. Check out Trap Them who has a full length and a seven inch on Trash Art! and an upcoming ep on Deathwish Inc. Backstabbers will be working on new material soon and I cannot wait.

Phobia headlined and it was just like seeing them any other time, just without a large crowd. I was into them, but I, like RF, was falling asleep to them (I was already asleep by the time they took the stage). The show ended just before midnight and six hours of sleep is enough for me to get through the day.
