Pennywise, Sick of it All, Lost City Angels
November 19, 2005
Lupo's in Providence, RI

I haven't heard much of the Lost City Angels before. I went to one of their shows once, but I didn't end up staying for some reason. Because of this, and all the good things I've read about them, I was looking forward to seeing them. I showed up a song or two into their set, and I liked what I heard. They played catchy and melodic street punk. Mix an Oi band with the Bouncing Souls, and you'll have an idea of what the Lost City Angels sound like. They were pretty good, but I was only able to watch about half their set because I went to interview Pennywise.

I missed a couple Sick of it All songs, including "Its Clobbering Time," but the rest of their set was nothing short of incredible. Lou Keller's voice was incredibly strong, keeping up the growled intensity of their live albums. Keller has a great hardcore voice that he put on display for the modest Lupo's crowd.

They played a lot of my favorites, including "My Life," "Scratch the Surface," and "Sanctuary" (I'm forgetting a lot of the others they played, but everything they played was great). They talked about the new album they have coming out, though I don't think they played any new songs (I could be wrong). They did manage to keep the crowd happy and moshing during their set.

I spent a lot of time before this show trying to remember if I've ever seen Pennywise at a club. I know I've seen them at Warped a bunch of times and I know I couldn't attend their show when they played Lupo's (maybe) six years ago (with Strung Out-I managed to be outside to hear them finish "Bro-Hymn), but I couldn't think of ever being present during one of their club shows.

I definitely had a lot of fun watching them play live. They played a good mix of songs from their albums, though tracks from Unknown Road were nonexistent. They opened with "?" and ended with "Bro Hymn" (obviously), and played other great tunes such as "Pennywise," "Perfect People," "Same Old Story," and a great cover of "Astro Zombies" by The Misfits (which was picked by the fans).

The crowd had a great time watching them, though getting onstage proved to be a bit difficult due to security. One kid got onstage, but had to fake out the security gaurd just so he could stage dive, which was a very impressive move that even the band enjoyed.

This was a great show of an up and coming punk band and two bands that have proven their worth time and time again. Its great to see that bands like Pennywise and Sick of it All are still relevant in the scene today, even though they aren't as popular as the "next hot thing" thats out there at any given time.
