Sharks Come Cruisin, Pretty Boy Thorson
The Penalty Box in Providence, RI
October 19, 2009
Through some sixth sense, I had the urge to listen to Sharks Come Cruisin' on Monday, going to their website to hear the multitude of songs that they have posted. I also took advantage of seeing when they would again be "pulling into port." I knew they were playing The Fest (anyone lucky enough to be in Gainesville Halloween weekend, make sure to check them out), but its been awhile since I've noticed them playing within lazy driving distance (about ten minutes). Due to a random burst of good luck and timing, I made sure to attend their cassingle release party.
Because I was working late, I missed Galvanize, walking in moments before "Pretty Boy Thorson" took the floor. With just an electric guitar, a mid sized amp and a gruff yet memorable voice, he immediately won me over. Reminding me of a mixture between Ben Nichols and Chuck Ragan, I was quite impressed. He had more of a singer/songwriter vibe than a country or folk one, though the songs had a sort of sad vibe going and there was many a mention of drinking (from what I could hear). The tempos were slow, the melodies were catchy and he covered "Skulls." The only shame was that less than ten paying were really paying attention to him. As they focused on their conversations, they missed out on one hell of a performance.
It was a quick set up before Sharks Come Cruisin' took the floor. A few people, myself included, got a good spot right up front for optimal card reading and sing alonging. The drums started the slow tom beat to "Johnny K," and the fun began. The sing alongs went beyond just what they had written on the cue cards, and the between songs banter was highly entertaining.
I came to the conclusion that their live set would be akin to a vessel (of any type or era) having their own "on ship band." They provide the entertainment while the crew sings along. Its like being at sea without the need of an actual ocean.
