Against Me!, The Epoxies, Smoke or Fire, The Soviettes
The Living Room in Providence, RI
September 22, 2005

I was in a hurry to get out of class and rush to this show without missing too much of it. We were presenting our Photoshop projects, making it impossible for me to blow the class off (especially since I haven't officially been accepted into the program yet), which was a bummer.

By 9, our projects had all been presented, and I had a cool pair of 3-D glasses (a kid in the class is a showoff). I was bummed that The Soviettes had already played, but eager to catch Smoke or Fire. Unfortunately, the teacher decided that him talking about the importance of the internet and the difference between JPG and GIF files were more important than me leaving to catch the show.

He talked for about ten minutes, but I still thought I would be able to watch at least some of their set. I was nearly out of my seat when a woman asked about our next project, which I'm sure he would have explained at our next class. I wanted to lovingly shoot her in the ear with a tomato becaue I knew my chances of seeing Smoke or Fire were quickly fading. I rushed to my car and hauled ass to the club, nearly hitting a woman about to cross the street. I walked into The Living Room just as Smoke or Fire were playing their last note.

The Epoxies had a fog machine and green lazer during their no lights intro. As they played their first song, a lit up Epoxies sign had been added to the previously mentioned effects. Because of this and their keyboard driven robotic sounding songs, they sounded like being on the inside of a party spaceship. I caught about half their set before I interviewed Joe of Smoke or Fire. I would have enjoyed the rest of their set, but I was glad to get outside, as the smell of the fog was making me sick.

If anyone can watch Against Me! play live and seriously not have a good time, I am convinced that they are dead inside and haven't realized it yet. I looked around the half full club many times during their set, and I only saw one person that had a miserable look on her face. In her defense, she was pretty ugly, so that could have just been her facial features (it almost looked as if her skin was drooping off her face). I shouldn't be one to talk (I am on the ugly side and people always think that I'm in a bad mood when I'm not), but manners lose out on this one.

Against Me! roared through their set with the crowd singing along to every word. They played a good mix of songs from each album, including "Pints of Guinness Make You Strong," "Reinventing Axl Rose," "Halking is Still Honest," "Sink, Florida, Sink," "You Look Like I Need a Drink," "Turn Those Clapping Hands Into Angry Balled Fists," "Miami," "Justin," "From Her Lips to Gods Ears (The Energizer)," "Problems," "Don't Lose Touch," and "Searching for a Former Clarity." They played more songs, but those are the ones that came into my short memory.

The crowd rushed the stage during their encore, which is killing me because I can't remember the name right now. It was pretty cool to watch, but I wonder if it forced them to end their set early, because they played that one song and split. Their set, as always, was energetic and fun as all hell. I left in a damn good mood, even though I missed most of the show.
