Sigourney Weaver Explains How "The Path Forks" For Neill Blomkamp's 'Alien' Movie, Danny McBride Reveals Role In 'Alien: Covenant'

We all know the story by now, but if you don’t, here’s the condensed version: Neill Blomkamp was all set to make his “Alien” movie, one that would pick up where “Aliens” leaves off, while ignoring the other movies that followed, until Ridley Scott flexed his muscle and put “Alien: Covenant” ahead of the queue. So, we’ll have to keep waiting for Blomkamp’s movie, but it seems the excitement is still there to make it.

While 20th Century Fox will mostly be sitting out at San Diego Comic Con this year and keeping footage and details from their upcoming slate of movies under wraps, they will be rounding up Sigourney Weaver, director James Cameron, producer Gale Anne Hurd, Bill Paxton, Lance Henriksen, Paul Reiser, Michael Biehn, and Carrie Henn, bringing them to Hall H to celebrate the 30th anniversary of “Aliens” (and the upcoming Blu-ray release). But of course, the elephant in the room will be Blomkamp’s movie, and Weaver teases how it sets itself apart in the series.

“It’s just as if, you know, the path forks and one direction goes off to [movies] three and four and another direction goes off to Neill’s movie,” she told EW.

It’s a bold move, and as we saw with “Terminator Genisys,” retconning or playing with timelines, if not done well, has consequences. Still, it’s safe to say that “Alien 3” and “Alien: Resurrection” didn’t live up to its predecessors, so if there’s a way to forge a new narrative path that works, while keeping the franchise alive, I could definitely see how 20th Century Fox would be interested.

But for now, we’ll all have to wait until ‘Covenant’ lands, and Scott is keeping details about the movie closely guarded. However, Danny McBride had a bit to offer, revealing his role to Rolling Stone and his experience on the movie that’s still in production.

“I’m the pilot of the spaceship Covenant, which is a colonization ship, searching for a planet where we might start life anew. I run the ship,” the actor explained. “…I didn’t know if it would be all green screen, but most of the stuff is practical effects: when you’re running from an alien it’s really a dude in an alien suit coming after you! The sets are incredible and you’re in them: We go through some inclement weather at one point on the spaceship and this whole gigantic set is on a gimbal, shaking up and down. You don’t have to use your imagination.”

“Alien: Covenant” opens on August 4, 2017. The 30th anniversary edition of “Aliens” hits Blu-ray and digital HD on September 13th.
