The "Fantastic Four" drama just won’t come to a close. Despite only pulling in a little more than $55 million domestically, less than the mid-00s movies took in their first three days, details of studio interference, and rumors of director Josh Trank’s “erratic” behavior—writer/producer Simon Kinberg claims hope for a sequel has not flatlined. Before the release of the new movie, a sequel had already been dated for the summer of 2017, which must’ve been problematic for Fox executives when the new film tanked so hard.
In a recent interview with MTV News, Kinberg said he is “really focused on the next one,” and also expressed his concerns about the media coverage focusing on the behind-the-scenes commotion. Kinberg went on to say, “Every time you make a movie, you want to make a great movie. It’s a ton of time and effort you put in. We made that movie in the sweltering heat of summer in Baton Rouge and I was there every day of photography. You’re waking up every morning being like, I want to go make a great movie. It was an opportunity to do that. I do believe there is a great ’Fantastic Four’ movie that [we can make] with that cast. So I’m gonna figure out what that is.”
Co-star Kate Mara also talked with MTV News, where she explained that it’s “unlikely” a sequel will happen, “but I would love to [do one]. I would love to play Sue Storm in a movie that everybody loves.” But then, she also told The Times (via Vulture) that she still hasn’t seen the first one, saying that the negative reviews have made her "a little gun-shy" over watching it. Kinberg is also in the news for some new rumors circulating on a “Deadpool 2” film; he told Collider that Fox is “feeling really good about it” since the movie lives up to the hype and expectations from the trailer, and potentially planning a sequel. Because that worked out so well with "Fantastic Four."
Across the Marvel/DC divide, in “Man of Steel” news, the allegations that a sequel has been put on hold have been squashed according to the latest rumors at Heroic Hollywood—no one puts Superman on hold, especially when he’s an integral player in the DCEU. Could “Mad Max: Fury Road” helmer/creator George Miller be in line to direct said sequel? Zack Snyder approves, but apparently is mulling up either a "Superman" movie or former Guillermo Del Toro project "Justice League Dark." Speaking of the “Man of Steel,” when could he step out of the shadows of the Justice League and get his own film? Reportedly not until at least 2019/2020, but the hypothetical they have spoken, and they say Superman could be fighting Brainiac whenever the film does come to fruition, while a new Heroic Hollywood piece suggests that Supergirl and Bizarro Superman could also feature.
Meanwhile, Emily Blunt has “no idea who Captain Marvel is,” and denied allegations in an interview with MTV that she will play the role of Carol Danvers in the upcoming film. “Captain Marvel” is set to be released in 2018, so we certainly have some time.
Last but certainly not least, Drew Goddard divulges to Cinema Blend that he won’t be directing 2017’s “Spider-Man,” because he “didn’t have an idea,” having expended his Spidey ideas on the shelved "Sinister Six" movie.
