Slamdance Exclusive: Clip From ‘Wexford Plaza’ Sends Some Sexts

It was hard enough to decode the intricacies of flirtation before the age of smartphones and social media, but now it can be near impossible to get the root of an emotional connection in a sea of emojis and selfies. And it’s that world that Canadian director Joyce Wong wants to explore in “Wexford Plaza,” making its North American Premiere at the Slamdance Film Festival.

Starring Reid Asselstine and Darrel Gamotin, and described as being in the spirit of Amy Schumer and Lena Dunham, the film follows Betty, whose misunderstanding of a sexual encounter leads to unexpected consequences. Here’s the official synopsis:

The story follows Betty (newcomer Reid Asselstine), a lonely strip mall security guard, as she struggles to deal with the consequences of a misunderstood sexual encounter with her deadbeat paramour (Darrel Gamotin). As Betty and her paramour’s lives unravel, the film explores what it means to come of age in a time when technology keeps us permanently tethered to our peers and their successes, but yet can also make us feel like the whole world is a million miles away.

“Wexford Plaza” will have its first screening at Slamdance on Friday, January 20th at 2:45 PM at the Ballroom. Check out our exclusive clip below along with images from the film.
