Sofia Coppola Teams With Bill Murray & Rashida Jones For First Film In The A24/Apple Partnership

Film fans had to wait four long years, between the releases of “The Bling Ring” and “The Beguiled,” for more Sofia Coppola goodness. But it appears it won’t take her that long to come back with her latest film, and she’s bringing one of her favorite collaborators along for the journey.

According to The Wrap, Coppola has agreed to write and direct her next film “On the Rocks” for A24 and Apple. And to sweeten the pot even further, the filmmaker will be joined by actors Bill Murray and Rashida Jones. The film is said to follow a young mother, played by Jones, that will attempt to reconnect with her playboy father (Murray) while on an adventure through New York City.

As mentioned, this isn’t the first time that Coppola has teamed with Murray on a film project. They famously collaborated on the 2003 film “Lost in Translation,” which firmly put the actor on the map as a serious capital-A actor and not just the guy from comedies, landing him his only Academy Award nomination. Previous to “On the Rocks,” the filmmaker and Murray worked together on Netflix’sA Very Murray Christmas,” which was directed by Coppola.

Before he’s able to re-team with the filmmaker, however, Murray will next be seen in the upcoming Jim Jarmusch film “The Dead Don’t Die” and the forthcoming Wes Anderson film (naturally), “The French Dispatch.”

Jones worked with Coppola on the aforementioned “A Very Murray Christmas,” but has developed a pretty good IMDB of her own, most notably with her TV appearances on “Parks and Rec” and “The Office.” She’ll next been seen in the film “The Sound of Silence,” and will lend her voice to the animated feature “Spies in Disguise.”

“On the Rocks” is important for business reasons, as well. The film will mark the first time that A24 officially works with Apple, after their 2018 agreement. Apple wants to get into the filmmaking business and has linked up with A24, who annually produces some of our favorite films, to help make that dream a reality. However, at this point, we don’t know what that means for “On the Rocks.” Presumably, A24 will handle the theatrical distribution, but it’s unclear whether or not this film will land on Apple’s forthcoming streaming service.

Either way, it’s good news because film fans are getting more Coppola/Murray goodness sooner than later.
