Sofia Coppola's 'The Beguiled' Starts Production, Sets Summer 2017 Release Date

It’s been three years since Sofia Coppola‘s last feature film (no, we’re not counting “A Very Murray Christmas“), and her return to the big screen couldn’t be more exciting. And not only has production started, we’re not going to have to wait long to see the result.

Focus Features has announced that filming is underway on “The Beguiled” starring Colin Farrell, Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst, Elle Fanning, Oona Laurence, Emma Howard, Angourie Rice and Addison Riecke. Based on the Southern Gothic novel by Thomas P. Cullinan, which was previously made into a film by Clint Eastwood in 1971, the drama unfolds in a girls’ school in the state of Virginia in 1864. As the Civil War rages, The Miss Martha Farnsworth Seminary for Young Ladies has been sheltered from the outside world — until the day a wounded Union soldier is discovered nearby and taken in.

“The Beguiled” will open on June 23, 2017 in limited release, before expanding on June 30, 2017. And I’d wager a Cannes Film Festival premiere in May is more than likely.
