Start Franchise Dreaming Again: Sony Considering Buying Fox

For a very brief moment earlier this month, nerds got a chance to dream of a world where Disney bought 20th Century Fox and brought the “X-Men, “Alien,” and “Avatar” franchises under the same roof as Marvel and Lucasfilm. Those talks came to an end after reports emerged, but the bottom line is that Fox is looking to sell. The parent company clearly wants to shed their movie division, which has some very lucrative brands and valuable properties in its vaults. As such, a variety of media companies are very interested in making a deal where Disney couldn’t.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Comcast Corp and Verizon Communications are taking a look, and Sony Corp. has also made informal overtures to buy Fox. For our purposes, the latter scenario would be very intriguing. If Sony bought Fox, it would allow them to bring more mutants into the mix for their evolving live-action Spider-Man franchise, and its villain-focused spinoff films, which launch with next year’s “Venom.” The possibilities are certainly endless, and the value that would bring to Sony for their future franchise endeavors is hard to put a number on (though I’m sure some poor accountants are tasked with doing just that).

However, this is all preliminary so who knows if it’ll wind up happening. But imagine, Deadpool and Spider-Man in the same movie? Dare to dream….
