Sony Working On 'Spider-Man' Spinoff 'Silver Sable And The Black Cat,' Paramount Developing R-Rated 'The Pro'

Get ready, there’s another comic book movie universe Hollywood is hoping to make you care you about. With Marvel‘s operation running like a well-oiled, money making machine, and DC Films stumbling along, now Sony is getting into the mix. The studio reboots Peter Parker this summer with “Spider-Man: Homecoming” (with a little help from Marvel) and you better believe they are not wasting a moment in creating an expanded universe. They’ve already got Venom” slated to be released next year, and now they’re adding another to movie to the roster.

THR reveals that a movie featuring Silver Sable and the Black Cat is now in the works, with Chris Yost (“Thor: The Dark World,” “Thor: Ragnarok“) working on the script first drafted by Lisa Joy (“Westworld“). This one is moving quickly along with plans to shoot this fall, and it’s yet another case of Sony seizing the opportunity to make now what they couldn’t make years ago. Black Cat has always come close to appearing in Sam Raimi‘s films (and was rumored for his unmade “Spider-Man 4“), while Felicity Jones was set up to play the character with her appearance in “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” but of course, that series fell apart before she could actually get into costume.

Meanwhile, it looks like Paramount is hoping to cash in on the R-rated comic book movie craze that has served Marvel so well following “Deadpool” and “Logan.” Deadline reports that the studio has snapped up Garth Ennis, Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti‘s graphic novel “The Pro.” The wacky premise follows a prostitute who joins the League Of Honor to clean up her ways, after suddenly gaining superhero powers. Uh, okay. Here’s the synopsis from Image Comics:

She curses, she smokes, she breast-feeds and she blows away the competition. Just when you think Garth Ennis has gone too far, just when you thought it was safe to walk the streets, just when you thought no one would go near the idea of the world’s first superhero prostitute…here comes The Pro!

Zoe McCarthy will be writing the script for this one, which sounds like it’ll be another playful take on the genre in the vein of “Deadpool.”

So, like it or not, the comic book movie genre is far from dead and isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
