St. Vincent To Direct 'The Picture Of Dorian Gray'

If you’ve listened to her self-titled 2015 Grammy Award winning album, you already have a taste of St. Vincent‘s creative and artful vision. In those songs, she used her glittering voice and blisteringly original guitar work to create the most melodic and beat-driven rock album of the last couple of years.

The singer-songwriter, whose real name is Annie Clark, tackled a different kind of art form this year when she took part in the femme-centric horror anthology “XX.” She joined well-esteemed names such as Jovanka Vuckovic, Jennifer Lynch, and Karyn Kusama in creating a quartet of chillers. Her short in “XX,” entitled “Birthday Party,” starred Melanie Lynskey and was the highlight of the film.

The singer-songwriter now turned director impressed enough people with “XX” that she has now been tapped to direct her first feature-length film, a movie based on Oscar Wilde‘s 1890 novel “The Picture of Dorian Gray,” but with a gender twist, with a female lead character, who strives to be eternally young.

What’s even more interesting about this particularly intriguing film is that David Birke is slated to write the screenplay. You may not know his name, but he recently wrote the scathing and brilliant screenplay for Paul Verhoeven-directed “Elle,” which also dealt with feminist issues. This does look like a fascinating vehicle for St. Vincent to tackle and will likely give her a chance to show off her feature-length chops, especially after showing considerable promise with “Birthday Party.” The filmmaker/musician is also gearing up to go on tour this fall.
