'Spielberg' Trailer: The Iconic Director Goes In The Spotlight

A master filmmaker (and no, this isn’t an argument), director Steven Spielberg has been turning out modern movie classics for decades and has contributed dozens of unimpeachable treasures to cinema. Movies will be unimaginably poorer the day he is gone. Opinions may vary on just what film is the best Spielberg film, from the landmark action-adventure film “Raiders of the Lost Ark” to pictures that have reinvented the way “monster movies” are presented with “Jaws” and “Jurassic Park,” to his more dramatic and weighty films movies such as “Schindler’s List,” “Saving Private Ryan” “Bridge of Spies” and “Lincoln.” He’s dabbled in more than a few genres and despite blips here and there, Spielberg has one of the most consistent track records in Hollywood.

Needless to say, it was only a matter of time until someone decided to turn their keen eye on the master himself.  Susan Lacy, who helmed PBSsAmerican Masters” for three decades, is that filmmaker. Her documentary on the director, “Spielberg,” explores the visionary’s thoughts on “Jaws,” “E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” “The Color Purple,” “Schindler’s List,” “Jurassic Park” and “Saving Private Ryan.” However, don’t expect the documentary to delve deep into his television credits or his personal home life but rather, how touchstone moments in his past may have informed the approach to a certain film.

If anyone were to doubt just how popular the director is, they’d only have to look at the incredible amount of talent lined up for testimonials in the film with names such as J.J. AbramsCate BlanchettFrancis Ford Coppola, Daniel Craig, Daniel Day-Lewis, Brian de Palma, Laura Dern, Leonardo DiCaprio, Richard Dreyfuss, Ralph Fiennes, Harrison Ford, David Geffen, Tom Hanks and many more. What’s interesting is to note that the names include artists who have been directly inspired or influenced by the director or given big, breakout roles, showcasing just how definitive the director’s career has been.
