Tomorrow morning, awards prognosticators, movie critics, and pretty much anyone who covers movies, will be turning their attention to the Toronto International Film Festival. Organizers will be unveiling their first wave of films, and as always, there’s plenty of speculation about what might show up. We’re not going to go too crazy into trying to read the tea leaves ourselves since we’re less than 24 hours away from a formal announcement. However, Deadline has run through every possibility under the sun, there is one movie that jumped out at us.
According to the trade, Terrence Malick‘s “Radegund” is a “possible” title that could show up at TIFF. The news is certainly surprising given that the director just released “Song To Song” a few months back, but by most accounts, his latest is quite different than his last few pictures.

Starring August Diehl, Valerie Pachner, Matthias Schoenaerts, Bruno Ganz, Martin Wuttke, Maria Simon, Karin Neuhäuser, and Alexander Fehling, the film will tell the true story of true WWII tale about Austrian conscientious objector Franz Jägerstätter. It’s a story of romance and drama, with Franz coming into conflict with those in the small town where he resides.
Early reports had said that the movie was not expected to arrive until 2018, but when it comes to Malick, it’s always best to expect the unexpected. This could certainly be a highlight, especially considering the director recently revealed he was “backing away” from the script-free, improvisation style of his recent string of movies.
