That 'Gremlins' Reboot Is Still Happening & The Guy Behind 'Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter' Is Producing

nullYou might have forgotten or blocked it from your memory, but earlier this year news surfaced that Warner Bros. was in negotiations with Steven Spielberg‘s Amblin Entertainment to reboot “Gremlins.” Why? Just because and probably because it’s a property that people know and has yet to be scorched and fully exploited for all its franchise potential. Rumors of a “Gremlins 3” had been floating for years and Joe Dante shot them down, but at any rate, it looks like they’re just gonna go down the do-over route, though the name they’ve enlisted to help produce doesn’t exactly inspire confidence.

The guy behind “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter,” writer Seth Grahame-Smith will now produce this effort alongside David Katzenberg. Hooray? Grahame-Smith may be a buzzy name around Hollywood, but his CV so far — ‘Vampire Hunter’ and “Dark Shadows” — won’t have “Gremlins” fans exactly screaming for excitement. But taking on old properties seems to be his thing, as he’s also writing/developing “Beetlejuice 2” with pal Tim Burton, so there’s that we suppose.

You know, they could just make this awesome and get Joe Dante involved, but that seems unlikely. Words like “honoring the original” will surely be tossed around, but “Gremlins” is exactly the kind of nasty kids stuff they don’t really make anymore. Even back then, it was a bit of an oddball movie, but it’s all about hitting four quadrants and opening internationally now, so we expect a softer and just not as good redo. But hey, plenty of time to prove us wrong. [Bloody Disgusting]
