Tom Cruise Says 'Top Gun 2' Is "Definitely Happening" In The Next Year

For almost as long as The Playlist has existed on the interwebs, there has been talk about a sequel to “Top Gun.” In fact, five years ago, Paramount had planned to make “Top Gun 2” before “Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation,” but those plans fell apart. And over the years, numerous screenwriters have come and gone on the project, and the passing of director Tony Scott also added to the long wait. However, it looks like Tom Cruise will be back in the cockpit very soon.

Dropping by the “Sunrise” show on Australia’s Seven Network, the actor stated that “filming will begin probably within the nnext year.”

“It’s happening. You’re the first people I’ve told. It’s going to happen,” he added.

Variety repots that Joseph Kosinski, who directed Cruise in “Oblivion,” is the frontrunner for the gig, and an offer is imminent. As for the story, a few years ago, producer Jerry Bruckheimer teased some details. “The concept is, basically, are the pilots obsolete because of drones. Cruise is going to show them that they’re not obsolete. They’re here to stay,” he said in 2012. Certainly, that narrative remains timely, but who knows if it’s changed in the years since.

We’ll see if more concrete news comes from the studio and if Paramount finally feels the need for speed.
