It looks like Tom Hanks is a Dave Eggers fan. The actor has already wrapped Tom Tykwer‘s adaptation of "A Hologram For The King," and now the actor is eying Eggers’ "The Circle" for the big screen. Hanks is attached to star in and produce the movie, with James Ponsoldt ("Smashed," "The Spectacular Now") writing and directing the thriller about "a young woman who is hired for a big job in an Internet monopoly called the Circle, which links users’ personal emails, social media, banking, and purchasing with their universal operating system, resulting in one online identity and a new age of civility and transparency." The package is being shopped around but given the sketchy state of "Internet movies" ("Men, Women & Children," the not so promising looking "Blackhat") we wonder how many will bite, even with Hanks involved. Ashley Hinshaw ("Chronicle," "Goodbye To All That") and ’80s rocker Rick Springfield (yes, really) are the latest additions to "True Detective" season two. No word yet on their roles. [Deadline/THR]
Kaya Scodelario ("The Maze Runner"), Lucy Boynton ("Miss Potter"), Gabrielle Wilde ("Endless Love"), Jenna Thiam ("Vie Sauvage"), and Alexandra Dowling ("The Musketeers") are testing for a role in "Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales." The part is for the love interest of Brenton Thwaites in the Johnny Depp-led swashbuckler. Production begins next year for the movie which doesn’t land until July 7, 2017. [Variety]
Christina Hendricks has joined Luke Wilson and Imogen Poots in the Cameron Crowe Showtime pilot "Roadies." The show "follows the day-to-day life of a successful rock tour as seen through the eyes of the crew members who help get the show on the road," and Hendricks will play the band’s production manager. Rafe Spall, Peter Cambor and Keisha Castle-Hughes are also part of the cast, with the pilot lensing in early 2015. [Deadline]
David Oyelowo has joined Lupita Nyong’o in the Brad Pitt-produced “Americanah.” The film is based on the novel by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and will tell the tale of "a pair of young Nigerian immigrants who face a lifetime of struggle while their relationship endures." No director is attached yet. [Variety]
Disney has announced that newcomer Ruby Barnhill has been cast as the young girl, Sophie, in Steven Spielberg‘s adaptation of Roald Dahl’s “The BFG.” The story follows a young London girl and the mysterious Giant who introduces her to the beauty and peril of Giant Country. Barnhill joins Mark Rylance who is playing the title role.
