Tom Hiddleston Still Insists He Won’t Be Playing James Bond

There are so many rumors about the next James Bond film that it’s hard to know who to believe. Here’s what seems to be concrete at the moment, according to the trades. One: Daniel Craig is not necessarily done, but his preferred director Sam Mendes has moved on. Craig has said in the past that he didn’t want to make “Skyfall” without Mendes, so if Craig comes back, he’s going to have to find a director he trusts. Additionally, even if he does take the role, Craig is busy with a TV show directed by Todd Fields which has been recently ordered by Showtime, and it could be a long time before another Bond film happens; plus there’s no script yet.

Secondly: It appears that the longtime 007 producer Barbara Broccoli is searching for potential new lead actors for role and has met with “Fantastic Four” actor Jamie Bell. What seems far more shaky is any role as such for Tom Hiddleston. He’s been a fan favorite for the role for some time, and the British oddsmakers have ranked him extremely high on their lists. There was a recent rumor that had appeared to confirm that Hiddleston was in “active” negotiations for the role, but it appears that’s not so.

“I’m sorry to disappoint you, everybody,” he said at a panel at Wizard World Philadelphia (via Comicbook.com). “I don’t think that announcement is coming. But I’m very gratified to hear the enthusiasm. There’s not much that I can say that I haven’t already said, but I know… your guess is as good as mine to be honest.”

Hiddleston could be playing coy, but if he at least hasn’t heard a peep yet, that would mean there are no negotiations in the works. Our guess is the truth is somewhere in between, with Hiddleston on a wish list and the Broccolis gauging his interest from his agents.

If you’ve seen the recent miniseries “The Night Manager,” it’s easy to see why Hiddleston has become a favorite. He’s not a spy per say on the show, but he is a dashing, clandestine mole working with MI6. There’s been rumors that Susanne Bier could direct the next Bond, and that gossip makes sense, because she helmed “The Night Manager” and it might be her best work to date.
