'Black Panther' Trailer: A Hero Comes Home

If the anticipation wasn’t already sky-high for Marvel’s “Black Panther”, this new trailer will fix that.

While “Black Panther” showed up in “Captain America: Civil War,” the solo picture looks to be as self-contained as “Guardians of the Galaxy” is, with director Ryan Coogler doing his own thing. Not due to open until early next year, we still have a little ways to go before the premiere, but Coogler has shown himself to be a formidable director, especially while fitting in to pre-established mythology (2015’s “Creed”) so it’ll be interesting to see how he takes on “Black Panther” (and how his regular collaborator Michael B. Jordan fits into the narrative). Here’s the official synopsis:

Marvel Studios’ Black Panther follows T’Challa (Boseman) who, after the death of his father, the King of Wakanda, returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation to succeed to the throne and take his rightful place as king. But when a powerful old enemy reappears, T’Challa’s mettle as king—and Black Panther—is tested when he is drawn into a formidable conflict that puts the fate of Wakanda and the entire world at risk. Faced with treachery and danger, the young king must rally his allies and release the full power of Black Panther to defeat his foes and secure the safety of his people and their way of life.

“Black Panther” is directed by Ryan Coogler and co-written by Coogler and Joe Robert Cole (who was a writer on “American Crime Story: The People vs. O.J. Simpson”). In addition to Chadwick Boseman and Michael B. Jordan, the film co-stars Martin Freeman, Lupita Nyong’o, Forest Whitaker, Angela Bassett, and Andy Serkis.

“Black Panther” opens on February 16, 2018.
