The War Isn't Over In Trailer For Josef von Sternberg's Newly Restored 'Anatahan'

Kino Lorber is issuing a new 2K restoration of Josef von Sternberg’s final film “Anatahan in theaters next month. Von Sternberg was a prominent figure in the late silent-movie era of the ’20s and transitioned easily to sound pictures. In his 1930 film, “The Blue Angel,” he introduced Marlene Dietrich to the world; they would collaborate together on six more pictures, including “Morocco” (1930), “Blonde Venus” (1932) and “The Devil Is A Woman” (1935). As for his 1953 swan song, it was a post-WWII tale with an intriguing twist. Here’s the film’s synopsis:

Inspired by an actual event during WWII, Josef von Sternberg’s Anatahan, tells the story of a dozen Japanese sailors who are stranded on the remote island of Anatahan during the waning days of the war. The war ends, unbeknownst to the men, and they engage in their own private war for dominance of their island domain and possession of the sole woman in their midst, Keiko (Akemi Negishi), the so-called “Queen Bee” of Anatahan.

“Anatahan” was an interesting feature for von Sternberg as he was given complete creative control by writing, directing, photographing, and narrating the film. It screened at the 14th Venice Film Festival and received modest reviews and poor box office upon its release. The film has had its champions over the years, though, including critics such as Dave Kehr. Now, thanks to Kino Lorber’s new restoration, more people will have an opportunity to see it for themselves.

“Anatahan” will start rolling out on February 3rd at New York City’s Metrograph, with more cities to follow. Click here to find out more playdates.
