You might have thought, or even hoped, that with Warner Bros. getting their DC movie slate together, the studio would put their live action remake of "Akira" to the side. You would be wrong. The project which was been years in development and nearly came close to shooting in 2012, before WB yanked the plug, is brewing once again.
THR reports "Daredevil" season 2 showrunner Marco J. Ramirez has been tapped to pen the script for "Akira." Last summer, Dante Harper was tasked with the gig but earlier this spring Jaume Collet-Serra, long attached to direct, indicated that the movie might be on hold, and it’s unclear if he’s still involved at this point. As for Ramirez, he has no feature writing experience, but has logged time on television with "Daredevil," "Orange Is The New Black," and "Sons Of Anarchy." So, we’ll see if Ramirez has the right touch to finally get this movie made, for better or worse.

Meanwhile, the trade also reports that Sony is being expanding the universe of yet another property, this time "21 Jump Street." Even as they try to figure out a way into "23 Jump Street"—which may or may not involve crossing over into the "Men In Black" series—they are cooking up a female-driven spinoff, not unlike what they’re doing with Paul Feig‘s "Ghostbusters" movie. And just like Warner Bros. and their DC universe movies, the studio has competing scripts from with one from sisters and "Bob’s Burgers" writers Lizzie and Wendy Molyneux, and another from "Broad City" scribes Lucia Aniello and Paul W. Downs.
No word yet on what the next Sony franchise will be next to get sequelized or spun-off from, but if you have ideas, share ’em below.
