After a string of ultimately disappointing films, Tim Burton is heading back to the world of stop-motion animation for “Frankenweenie.” Will it prove to be as creatively refreshing as “Fantastic Mr. Fox” was for Wes Anderson? Check out the two clips and featurette below and decide for yourself.
The two clips are fairly short, both clock in around the one minute mark, and set up the premise for the film, which, in case you somehow missed, follows a young boy named Victor who manages to bring his dead dog back to life. Like Anderson’s own stop-motion entry, Burton’s take allows him to fully indulge in his aesthetic (hell, even the protagonist bears a passing resemblance to his perennial lead actor, Johnny Depp) and also flesh out a story he first tackled as a short in 1984.
And while the four-minute featurette is typical EPK fluff, it does show the level of control Burton maintained on the film — he drew all the characters — and it gives a look at some of the voice work in the film by Martin Landau, Martin Short, Catherine O’Hara and Winona Ryder. Although we were less than impressed with Burton’s recent films we’re really pulling for this one to hit that sweet spot his earlier work did. Tim Burton’s “Frankenweenie” his theaters October 5th.
