They say history repeats itself, and if you think the story of blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo is from a time in America that has long since passed, guess again. "The debate on the NSA, wiretapping, how much we invade a person’s privacy — that continues," Bryan Cranston told THR at the Toronto International Film Festival. "Trumbo didn’t commit a crime, yet he went to prison. So he’s emblematic of oppressed people throughout our history, whether it’s African-Americans or Latinos or communists. In America, there was a time when fear-mongering was tremendously effective. We are continuing to relive it."
TIFF Review: Jay Roach’s ‘Trumbo’ Starring Bryan Cranston, Helen Mirren, Diane Lane & Louis C.K.
Those themes will be present in the upcoming biopic, "Trumbo," which finds Walter White in the title role. Jay Roach ("Meet The Parents," "Recount") directs the story of the man who won Oscars for the "The Brave One" and “Roman Holiday," all while banned from working because of his socialist leanings, using a pseudonym to submit his work. It’s not often you find movies about Hollywood that also have a heavy dose of politics in the mix, so this is one unique drama to check out as the awards season heats up.
