Watch: Disaster Strikes In New Trailer For 'Deepwater Horizon' Starring Mark Wahlberg

While the longer days and summer heat means that we’re in the midst of blockbuster mania, there are many in Hollywood who are already bracing themselves for what’s coming as soon as August ends — the awards season. It officially kicks off with the double header of film festivals in Venice and Telluride, which is quickly followed by TIFF, and there are going to be plenty of movies jostling for attention, hoping to stay in the game all the way to February to collect trophies at the Dolby Theater. Will “Deepwater Horizon” be one of them?

Reteaming “Lone Survivor” duo, director Peter Berg and star Mark Wahlberg, the film tells the story the tragedy behind the BP oil spill, one of the worst environmental disasters in United States history. It’s certainly a powerful story, and if this resonates, it could be a picture that’s in the Oscar mix. Here’s the official synopsis:

On April 20th, 2010, one of the world’s largest man-made disasters occurred on the Deepwater Horizon in the Gulf of Mexico. Directed by Peter Berg (Lone Survivor), this story honours the brave men and women whose heroism would save many on board, and change everyone’s lives forever.

Co-starring Kurt Russell, John Malkovich, Gina Rodriguez, Dylan O’Brien and Kate Hudson, “Deepwater Horizon” opens on September 30th. Watch the new trailer above.
