Watch A Gripping Final Trailer For Kathryn Bigelow's 'Detroit' Starring John Boyega

We wondered, when Kathryn Bigelow’s “Detroit” was set for a late-summer release, if it might mean that the film was a bit of a misfire — often, seemingly awards-baity stuff like this, especially coming from a director with two Best Picture nominees in a row (and one winner), is held for the fall. Was it a sign that the film was more “K-19: The Widowmaker” than “The Hurt Locker?”

But reviews have hit for the film ahead of its opening (look for ours in the next hour or two), and they suggest that Bigelow and writing partner Mark Boal have delivered again with their look at the 1968 Detroit Riots, and the Algiers Motel Incident that took place during them that resulted in the death of three black teenagers.

And to get you further pumped, distributors Annapurna (whose first film release this will be) have dropped a new trailer that goes more in depth than any before into the movie, showcasing both Bigelow’s visceral documenting of the events, and the terrific cast, which includes John Boyega, Will Poulter, Algee Smith, Jacob Latimore, Jason Mitchell, Hannah Murray, Jack Reynor, Kaitlyn Dever, Ben O’Toole, Anthony Mackie, John Krasinski and more.

The film goes into limited release this Friday (a last-minute shift by the company suggesting a willingness to capitalize on those strong reviews), before going wide as planned on August 4th. Watch the new trailer below.
