‘Your Name’ Getting Live-Action Reboot From J.J. Abrams

Last week, word emerged that Paramount was none too happy about their golden boy J.J. Abrams once again taking a work vacation from the studio, where he has a longtime deal with his Bad Robot shingle, to go play in Disney‘s sandbox and make another “Star Wars” movie. Well, it looks like he’s trying to make it up to them.

Abrams will put his producing powers toward a live-action remake of this year’s dazzling anime sensation, “Your Name.” Makoto Shinkai‘s gorgeous film has earned over $355 million worldwide, which tells the story of high schoolers Mitsuha and Taki, who soon start waking up randomly inside each other’s bodies. They start leaving notes and messages for each other are complete, while they investigate the deeper connection they share. It’s a gorgeous, clever story and while we’d ordinarily be worried about some big, dumb Hollywood redo that would probably solely lean on the body swap comedy part of the story, we have a little bit of faith it’ll be done right.

Eric Heisserer, who penned Denis Villeneuve‘s “Arrival,” will write the script, and we’re glad that someone who has proven to have a sharp pen for smart sci-fi will be taking this on. Still, we’re keeping cautious about any optimism. While we wait, if you haven’t watched “Your Name,” it’s flat-out great, so track it down (preferably with its original Japanese language track with English subs) and clear some time in your schedule.
