The 38th Independent Spirit Awards were held today on the famous Santa Monica Pier in Santa Monica, California, and it was highlighted by the continued award season dominance for “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” The A24 multiverse comedy-drama took home the top prize for Best Feature, Best Director and Best Screenplay for Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert, Best Editing, Best Lead Performance for Michelle Yeoh, Best Supporting Performance for Ke Huy Quan, and Best Breakthrough Performance for Stephanie Hsu. For the second weekend in a row, the Daniels’s film has shown that it’s heading down a path to a history making night at the Oscars next Sunday.

Beyond the “Everything Everywhere All at Once” wins, Best First Feature went to Charlotte Wells’s drama “Aftersun,” with the Best First Screenplay Prize going to John Patton Ford’s work on “Emily the Criminal.” Todd Field’s “TÁR” didn’t walk away empty handed, as it went home with the Best Cinematography prize. Rounding out the film winners was “Joyland” for Best International Feature, “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed” winning Best Documentary Feature, and the John Cassavetes Award going to “The Cathedral.”
On the television side of things, FX’s “The Bear” took home two major prizes with wins in the Best New Scripted Series and Best Supporting Performance in a New Scripted Series going to Ayo Edebiri. Quinta Brunson received the award for Best Lead Performance in a New Scripted Series for her work on “Abbott Elementary,” and HBO’s “The Rehearsal” won Best New Non-Scripted or Documentary Series.
It was a notable year for the Spirit Awards, as the show made a historic change to its major acting categories, going with gender-neutral categories with ten nominees in both the Best Lead Performance and Best Supporting Performance for the first time in the show’s existence. The same rules also applied to the Best Lead Performance in a New Scripted Series and Best Supporting Performance in a New Scripted Series categories. Also, for the first time since 2005, the Best Breakthrough Performance category was reinstated, highlighting the best new performer in a feature film from the past year. Lastly, the 38th Independent Spirit Awards wasn’t broadcasted on the IFC network like in past years. Instead, the show was on IMDb’s YouTube channel, Film Independent’s YouTube channel, and Twitter, which turned out to be a very successful move for the show as it ran pretty smoothly.
