'Andor': Diego Luna Says TV Format Is "Amazing" But It Feels Like Shooting "A Very Long Movie"

With Season 2 of “The Mandalorian” wrapped up, we can finally start looking ahead to the vast number of new TV projects coming to Disney+ that aim to expand the “Star Wars” universe. And one of our most-anticipated series that has already been announced is “Andor,” starring Diego Luna reprising his role as Cassian Andor from “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” And speaking to THR, it appears that Luna is really excited to venture back into the galaxy far, far away and tackling a character that audiences last saw die at the end of the aforementioned film .

“It’s really interesting to tell a story even though we know where it ends,” explained Luna. “The way you can approach a story like this inevitably takes you into a deeper process of reflection. I tend to use that word a lot. So once you know what Cassian is capable of, then there’s room for so much exploration, and that’s something that excites me a lot as an actor.”

He added, “I think the format of a series is amazing because we have a lot of time to explore all those layers. What happens in ‘Rogue One’ is something we can actually reflect on, and what’s behind something like [sacrificing an informant]. It’s a very interesting challenge, the one we have in front of us. So I’m really excited to go back to that character because I really enjoyed playing him, and I was really happy with what the film represents.”

And though “Andor” is a TV series, Luna said that the production, so far, doesn’t feel remotely like a TV production. Instead, he feels like this is the same level of project as “Rogue One.”

“The way we’re shooting this reminds me of how we shot the film, and the amount of work behind this TV series reminds me of the work you do for a film. It feels like we’re doing a very long movie,” he said.

As we saw in the recent sizzle reel that was released as part of Disney’s Investors Presentation, Luna and the folks working on “Andor” are really trying to convey the feeling that just because this is a Disney+ production, this is just as well-made and epic as any “Star Wars” feature film. You know, because streaming is the future and all of that. Blah blah blah.

A release date for “Andor” has yet to be announced, but with production underway, we are on track to hit Disney’s anticipated 2022 window.
