While we are not quite in awards season just yet, it’s clear that one of the big frontrunners is Sean Baker’s “Anora.” From the moment it debuted at Cannes (taking home the Palme d’Or, no less), it’s been described as a major Oscars player. And now, general audiences will get to see the film, as it’s finally arriving in theaters.
As seen in the trailer, “Anora” tells the story of a dancer who gets swept up off her feet by a customer. However, not everyone is happy about this new relationship. The film stars Mikey Madison, Mark Eydelshteyn, Yuri Borisov, Karren Karagulian, and Vache Tovmasyan. The film is written and directed by Baker. He’s probably best known for films such as “Tangerine” and “The Florida Project.” His most recent film is the drama, “Red Rocket.”
We saw the film as part of its time at Cannes, and in our review we said, “For all the questions you’ll have over Ani’s choices (girl, get a lawyer), it’s the actors alongside Madison who carry “Anora” across the finish line. It’s a transformative moment for the ‘Better Things’ star, who portrays Ani with an unflinching charisma. On the other hand, the fresh-faced Eydelshteyn appears to be the second coming of Timothée Chalamet. At least in terms of potential star power.”
“Anora” is set to arrive in select theaters on October 18 before expanding nationwide in November. You can watch the new trailer below.
Here’s the synopsis:
Anora, a young sex worker from Brooklyn, gets her chance at a Cinderella story when she meets and impulsively marries the son of an oligarch. Once the news reaches Russia, her fairytale is threatened as his parents set out for New York to get the marriage annulled.
