'Breaking Bad' & 'Sherlock' Dominate 2014 Primetime Emmy Awards As 'True Detective' & 'Game Of Thrones' Lose Out

Breaking BadThe 66th Primetime Emmy Awards were held last night in Los Angeles. And if you thought that NBC were somehow airing a repeat of last year’s ceremony, you’d be forgiven: the awards were dominated by previous winners, with "Modern Family" tieing "Frasier"’s record for most victories in comedy, and "Breaking Bad" taking its third drama prize on the trot.

Hotly-tipped newcomers like "True Detective," "Fargo" and "Orange Is The New Black" were virtually shut out, taking only three prizes between them ("True Detective" and "Fargo" both winning for directing, and "Fargo" took Best Miniseries), while other favorites like "Game Of Thrones" and "Mad Men" came out empty handed. Instead, "Modern Family" took three awards, including Ty Burrell for Best Supporting Actor, while "Breaking Bad" took three acting prizes, including a fourth for Bryan Cranston along with the dramatic writing Emmy for Moira Walley-Beckett and her episode "Ozymandias."

"Sherlock" performed unexpectedly well, beating out HBO‘s "The Normal Heart" and sending Tumblr crazy with a writing victory, and awards for Best Actor for Benedict Cumberbatch and Best Supporting Actor for Martin Freeman ("Normal Heart" did take Best TV Movie at least). In general it was all a case of same ‘ol same ‘ol, making the Oscars look positively adventurous, but we’ll have more analysis later on. Take a look below for the full list of winners, as well as the opening monologue by host Seth Myers.
