The Telluride Film Festival has always made secrecy part of its identity. While Venice, Toronto, and New York reveal their programs weeks or months in advance, Telluride traditionally waits until just before opening day, leaving attendees to arrive in Colorado largely on faith.

A movie with a title as provocative as “Bucking Fastard” should have a little more edge than what Werner Herzog delivers here. His episodic drama stars Kate Mara and Rooney Mara as Jean and Joan Holbrooke, two sisters so codependent that they do nearly everything in unison, but the result is a decidedly muted affair. Herzog squanders two good performances and a great concept in service of the cinematic equivalent of doing donuts in a parking lot.

He is calm enough to walk into any medical disaster and damaged enough to mistake more danger for self-care.

When Cate Blanchett appeared in the “Squid Game” finale as an American recruiter in Los Angeles, many assumed Netflix was teasing David Fincher’s long-rumored U.S. spinoff. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk denied the connection, while Blanchett later said she was “wildly open” to returning in any form. But if the Academy Award-winning actress does return to the franchise, it won’t be for Fincher’s version.

Sources close to the filmmaker tell The Playlist that Netflix is no longer moving forward with “Heckler,” the working title for Fincher’s long-developing English-language spinoff of the Korean phenomenon.

The Venice Film Festival has announced its lineup. The Toronto International Film Festival has unveiled most of its significant and expansive class. Today, after previously announcing opening night and centerpiece films, the New York Film Festival selection committee dropped its 2026 class. And there were seemingly more snubs than usual. Well, for now at least.

Currently, there are just four world premieres: Tony Gilroy’s “Behemoth!,” Takashi Yamazaki’s “Godzilla Minus Zero,” Ava DuVernay’s “14th,” and Turkish director Mani Haghighi’s “I Deserve a Lover Whose Every Rise Sets Fiery Dooms Raging Across the Skies.” That’s a healthy number considering the New York Film Festival is curated as a “best of the best” endeavor.
