'Damsel' Trailer: Robert Pattinson & Mia Wasikowska Play Wild West Lovers

The Western genre has always been very male-dominated. However, the title of the upcoming film “Damsel” suggests that it might put a new twist on the genre. Mia Wasikowska and Robert Pattinson play 18th-century lovers with Wasikowska playing the supposed damsel in question. According to a review from our site, “Damsel” attempts to subvert the cliched “damsel in distress” archetype. The story depicts Samuel (Pattinson) pursuing his beloved Penelope (Wasikowska) because he suspects that she has been kidnapped. But supposedly, Samuel is being misled into believing so.

“Damsel” looks to be another interesting project in Robert Pattinson’s post-“Twilight” filmography. Seeing him go from the grimy thriller “Good Time” to a farcical Western like “Damsel” is quite impressive.  Normally, Mia Wasikowska tackles more refined dramatic material. But, it’s refreshing to see her do something much lighter and try to demonstrate her versatility. On a side note, this is also the second collaboration between the two actors who starred in 2014’s “Maps To The Stars.”

At the film’s helm are David and Nathan Zellner who previously did the 2014 drama “Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter.” ‘Kumiko’ didn’t receive much traction in terms of box office or major awards recognition. But given the star power of Robert Pattinson, maybe “Damsel” could reach a more widespread audience. Also, “Damsel” could allow the Zellner brothers to receive recognition outside the indie circuit. Plus, Mia Wasikowska is someone who’s been on the verge of a career breakthrough. It’s possible this could help her achieve that. If not, then at least, the film is still a demonstration of her willingness to tackle different kinds of material.

All in all, “Damsel” looks like it could be a fun twist on the classic Western genre. Its farcical tone mixed with its attempt to toy with traditional gender roles should make it an interesting watch.

“Damsel” is set for release on June 22nd via Magnolia Pictures.
