If you weren’t already psyched for David Fincher’s upcoming film, “Mank,” then Netflix probably is about to cement your excitement by finally announcing a release date for the long-awaited, black and white period drama.
According to Collider, after months of speculation, Netflix is ready to release “Mank” on December 4. Yes, in just under two months, we’ll all have a new Fincher film to keep us happy. For those not keeping up with all the goings-on with “Mank,” the film is written by Jack Fincher (the filmmaker’s late father) and tells the true story of screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz and his battles with director Orson Welles over the production and writing credits behind “Citizen Kane.”

As if there wasn’t already enough hype with the film, as it has Fincher behind the camera and an all-star cast led by Gary Oldman in front of the lens, by Netflix placing the film in early December, it’s clear the streaming service has faith that “Mank” will be a serious Oscar contender this year. Normally, we’d see a film like this debut in October or November, when many of the Oscar films drop, but with the awards consideration dates moved to early 2021, Netflix is releasing “Mank” in time to qualify and still be early enough to dominate the conversation.
But awards consideration aside, Netflix is also looking to attract plenty of eyes to this film, as the streaming service’s relationship with Fincher is long and storied. Dating back to “House of Cards,” Fincher has produced, written, and directed numerous episodes of TV for the streaming service, most recently on the acclaimed serial killer drama, “Mindhunter.” This marks the first feature film from Fincher for Netflix and the first overall for the filmmaker since 2014’s “Gone Girl.”
