'Dundee' Teasers: Danny McBride Goes Down Under

Welcome to 2018, where not even two minutes of footage from “Dundee: The Son of a Legend Returns Home” — a movie that nobody knew existed until the last couple of days — has already sparked a backlash. Sigh.

Yep, none other than Luke Buckmaster at The Guardian has written an alarmist op-ed “Crocodile Dundee was sexist, racist and homophobic. Let’s not bring that back” wherein he wrings his hands about the forthcoming rebootquel with some rather…interesting…reasoning. He claims that the only way the “Dundee: The Son of a Legend Returns Home”could remain faithful to the original, Paul Hogan starring films, would be to “capture the spirit” of the “sexist, racist, homophobic and transphobic” content, something he obviously doesn’t want to happen.

Certainly, the original trilogy of movies (frankly, I totally forgot there was even a third movie) are horribly dated, but here’s the thing: they were already dated by time “The Simpsons“started making fun of them in the 1990s (see “Bart vs Australia“). If we’re going to judge the new ‘Dundee’ based on the minimal material we have so far (sure, why not?) it certainly looks like Danny McBride is the butt of the joke, not minority groups. He’s certainly far from the stereotyped and garish image of male machismo that Hogan displayed in the late ’80s and for a brief moment, in early 2001.

With that out of the way, the project still remains a total mystery. Is this just some elaborate promo for a Super Bowl ad? Will this movie even hit cinemas or will it be a highly marketed VOD job? Guess we’ll find out soon enough, but maybe let’s see what it is before freaking out about its content?
