Back before Zack Snyder unleashed his “Man of Steel” and kickstarted the DCEU, and hot on the heels of Marvel Studios hitting it big with the ambitious “Iron Man” film, Warner Bros. began developing a “Black Adam” superhero film with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson attached. It was 2009, and boy, oh boy, how things were different. But now, a full decade later, Zack Snyder is gone from superhero films, Marvel Studios rules the world, and “Black Adam” is still MIA. Alas, it appears that it will actually get made. For real, this time. Maybe. I mean, Johnson says so.
According to a recent tweet by Dwayne Johnson, the plan to film “Black Adam” in 2020 is still a go, with July scheduled as the starting month, with ‘The Shallows’ director Jaume Collet-Serra at the helm. Once again, we’re teased by the actor about the possibility of the anti-hero making his way to the big screen, but this time, it really does seem like all signs point to it happening.
For those not familiar with the source material, “Black Adam” is actually a spin-off of “Shazam!” However, at the time when the film was first in its infancy, the idea of a “Shazam!” film was not even considered. Now, though, after the fan-favorite superhero film from earlier this year began a new superhero fantasy franchise, “Black Adam” is set to capitalize on that success and bring a new angle to the mythology.
Unlike Zachary Levi’s kid-turns-into-an-adult superhero film, “Black Adam” is set to be decidedly darker, with the title character being more of an anti-hero and sometimes villain, who uses his immense power to protect his land and his people, by any means necessary. The character has many of the same skills as Shazam, but has been around since the ancient Egyptian times and is far more lethal than his heroic counterpart.
If “Black Adam” is actually set to begin filming in July 2020, it seems as if it would pre-date the already-announced “Shazam!” sequel. If that’s the case, it’ll be interesting to see how Warner Bros. proceeds with the franchises, as it’s inevitable for them to cross over at some point. Honestly, let’s not count our chickens before they hatch. First, let’s see if this whole “Black Adam” dream every comes to fruition.
