Ennio Morricone Reteams With Terrence Malick, Will Score 'Voyage Of Time'

Ennio MorriconeTerrence Malick hasn’t always had the easiest time with composers. James Horner had spoken out loudly on multiple occasions about his difficulties during the making of "The New World," and going all the way back to the director’s sophomore feature, "Days Of Heaven," the legendary Ennio Morricone admitted it wasn’t always an easy process working on that movie.

"He didn’t know me very well, so he made suggestions, and in some cases, gave musical solutions. This kind of annoyed me because he’d say: ‘This thing . . . try it with three flutes.’ Something impossible! So, to humor him, I would do it with three flutes and then he’d decide to use my version after all," Morricone said in the documentary, "Rosy-Fingered Dawn." "….he was very attentive and careful about music."

However, it seems time has healed any wounds that might’ve been made, as the pair are working together again.

According to the website of production company Wild Bunch, Morricone is providing original music for Malick’s forever in production "Voyage Of Time." The documentary is a celebration of the universe, displaying the whole of time, from its start to its final collapse, exploring science and spirit, birth and death, the grand cosmos and the minute life systems of our planet. The project will be delivered in a two flavors: a 40-minute IMAX version narrated by Brad Pitt which will be delivered first, and a feature length edit narrated by Cate Blanchett.

No word yet if Morricone will a distinct score for each version, or if he’ll re-edit the work from the longer version for the IMAX edit, but at 86 years old, the composer has massive projects on his plate. Don’t forget, he’s also tuning up Quentin Tarantino‘s upcoming "The Hateful Eight."

No release date(s) yet for "Voyage Of Time," which Malick has been working on for years, but we’re also waiting on the tentatively titled drama "Weightless" too, and he doesn’t seem to be in any rush to get either picture out there.
