Fede Alvarez Rumored To Produce A New ‘Texas Chainsaw’ That Will Be A Direct Sequel To The ‘74 Classic

Horror reboots/remakes are all the rage right now. Thanks to the monumental success of last year’s “Halloween,” studios are hurrying to snatch up old slasher/horror franchises to bring to audiences. We’ve seen it with Jordan Peele’s upcoming “Candyman,” the recently released “Child’s Play,” and even the upcoming “Black Christmas.” But one of the biggest, and longest-running, slasher properties, “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” is rumored to be coming back, and it’s borrowing a page out of the “Halloween” playbook.

According to Bloody Disgusting, Legendary is developing a new iteration of “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” that the studio is hoping will introduce the classic franchise to a new audience. And to help Legendary bring the franchise back, Fede Alvarez is rumored to be on board as a producer on the film.

However, this isn’t going to be your typical remake or reboot. Hell, we’ve already seen companies do this a couple of times with ‘Texas Chainsaw.’ Instead, the report says that Alvarez and Legendary are interested in developing a new film in the franchise that will serve as a direct sequel to Tobe Hooper’s 1974 classic. This is obviously a response to the monster success that Blumhouse saw with the recent “Halloween” reboot-quel, which did the same thing. Now, that franchise has two more sequels in the works and a whole new generation of fans.

Can Legendary replicate that success with ‘Texas Chainsaw?’ That’s a tough question to answer. Alvarez is said to only be attached as producer, so you won’t have the filmmaker’s directing muscle (showcased in films like “Don’t Breathe” and “Evil Dead“) behind the feature. Adding to that, there’s the fact that ‘Texas Chainsaw’ doesn’t have the same “killer on a mission to destroy everything in his path” plot that “Halloween” does. Instead, ‘Texas Chainsaw’ focuses more on the entire crazy family that murders and eats young people, with Leatherface being just merely a member of the family.

That being said, there’s a ton of potential here, as has been proven by the 2003 remake that earned over $80 million at the domestic box office and spawned more sequels. So, if Michael Bay can do it, then Legendary and Fede Alvarez surely can, as well.
