Terrence Malick's 'A Hidden Life': First Clip Gives Us A Peek At The Long-Awaited Drama [Cannes]

If you haven’t been able to gather from our extensive reporting on the film, we are psyched about Terrence Malick’s upcoming “A Hidden Life.” How excited, you may ask? Well, the fact that the latest clip is only 15 seconds long and still had us smiling should tell you.

As “A Hidden Life” prepares for its Cannes world premiere, a short clip from the Malick film has found its way online. As mentioned, the clip is brief, but in it, we see the two stars August Diehl and Valerie Pachner showing their love for each other, playing the married couple of Franz and Fani Jägerstätter. Also on display is the stylings of Mr. Malick himself, who has never been one to stick to common, or traditional, methods of filming.

Yes, we may have been watching this clip over and over already. And like we said, it’s exciting. For those that haven’t been following the news of “A Hidden Life,” the film tells the harrowing true story of the aforementioned Franz Jägerstätter, a conscientious objector to the Third Reich during World War II.

“A Hidden Life” was a surprise addition to the Cannes lineup. Before we began hearing the word that the film would premiere at the French festival, it seemed like Malick was never going to get done in post-production on the film, which was originally titled “Radegund.”

Malick’s film stars Diehl and Pachner alongside Matthias Schoenaerts, Ulrich Matthes, Maria Simon, as well as Michael Nyqvist and Bruno Ganz, both of whom died shortly after filming.

Based on real events, A HIDDEN LIFE is the story of an unsung hero, Franz Jägerstätter, who refused to fight for the Nazis in World War II. When the Austrian peasant farmer is faced with the threat of execution for treason, it is his unwavering faith and his love for his wife, Fani, and children that keeps his spirit alive.
