Entertainment Weekly’s Fall Film preview issue has landed, at least online, and for fans anticipating what’s coming in the next few months, it’s like the gift that keeps on giving. EW rolled out multiple first looks and new photos of many hotly tipped films coming out during awards season, including David O. Russell’s “Joy” starring Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, and Robert De Niro; the transgender drama, “The Danish Girl,” starring Eddie Redmayne from director Tom Hooper (“The King’s Speech”); Johnny Depp as a ruthless gangster in “Black Mass”; and “By The Sea,” the next directorial effort from Angelina Jolie, starring hubby Brad Pitt.
EW also has the first image from “Our Brand Is Crisis,” a political drama from David Gordon Green and producer George Clooney, which stars Sandra Bullock. Evidently it was something originally pegged for Clooney to star in.

“About two and a half years ago I put out feelers saying, ‘I’m not reading anything I’m excited about,’ ” Bullock told EW. “ ‘Are there any male roles out there that [the filmmakers] don’t mind switching to female?’ ” Clooney, who had just starred with Bullock in “Gravity,” and his producing partner Grant Heslov, was quick to jump to the idea.
The character is “basically a female Karl Rove,” Bullock said. “She’s brilliant at the devious side of politics.” The film comes out on October 30th and will likely vie for Oscar contention.
For “Joy,” while David O. Russell has said the movie is a tonal change of pace, his methods haven’t evolved all that much. “It’s fascinating and terrifying working for him because he’s a mad scientist genius,” Jennifer Lawrence told EW. “He’s inspired by anything. One time he wrote a scene by watching me get my hair done. He just went, ‘Oh! The sound of a shovel in the ground. Sinister!’ And then he ran out of the room,” she added with a laugh.
“I always see the wide eyes of people who’ve never worked with him before. I tell them, ‘You have to let go of all your sh-t. You are the paint. He’s the paintbrush and the canvas,” she added. The movie is due Christmas day, and is also sure to be a huge Oscar player.
“The Danish Girl” will be another major awards contender. It arrives November 27, but will be all over the film festival circuit too. “By The Sea” opens Nov. 13 (likely a strong AFI bet), and “Black Mass” arrives next month after a world premiere in Venice first. Check out the new photos below.
