The talented Irish McDonagh family has a lot to be proud of today. This morning "The Guard" director John Michael McDonagh’s latest project, a black comedy about a good priest tormented by his community, titled "Cavalry" was announced, and now photos from his brother's latest, Irish playwright turned writer/director Martin McDonagh's "Seven Psychopaths" have surfaced via Entertainment Weekly.
Reteaming McDonagh with his "In Bruges" star Colin Farrell, the black comedy (natch, what else? It's his bread and butter) also stars Sam Rockwell, Woody Harrelson, Christopher Walken, Olga Kurylenko, Abbie Cornish, Kevin Corrigan, Gabourey Sidibe and it juxtaposes the idea of ruthless men and their seeimgly incongruous affections for sweet little things. In this case, it's cute-looking toy dogs.
"Seven Psychopaths" centers on a screenwriter (Colin Farrell) who gets caught up in his pal's dog-kidnapping plot, spurned on by an out of work actor (Sam Rockwell), only to discover that the owner (Woody Harrelson) is a notorious and derganged ganster with an inordinate amount of love for his shih tzu. When his beloved dog goes missing, the mobster goes insane with furious vengeance and sicks the entire underworld on this gang of inept buffoons. Walken plays a professional dognapper who returns dogs to their owners for the reward money.Sidibe plays a dogwalker, Cornish plays Farrell's girlfriend and Bond girl Kurylenko plays Harrelson's arm candy.
'Psychopaths' is also a reunion with the devlish filmmaker (who won an Oscar for his live-action short "Six Shooter" in 2004) and Rockwell and Walken. Both actors, along with Anthony Mackie and Zoe Kazan starred in McDonagh's 2010 Broadway play "A Behanding in Spokane."
“The comedy elements in this one are probably stronger or more to the forefront than 'In Bruges,' ” McDonagh told EW. “Obviously, things don’t go according to plan, and the people who cause [the dog] not to be with [Harrelson] get their comeuppance.”
While there's no release date for the comedy just yet, EW says CBS films plans to release the film in the fall, which means it will likely make its debut during the fall film festival season.
