What to say about Nick Cassavetes, son of the late, great John Cassavetes? His high marks as a director come nearly twenty years ago, with 2004’s “The Notebook” and 2006’s “Alpha Dog.” And he hasn’t made a film since 2014’s “The Other Woman” with Cameron Diaz.

So why should moviegoers be interested in “God Is A Bullet,” Cassavetes’ new film, Deadline reports, hits theaters in June? Well, the cast, the plot, the source material, all of it; this movie sounds like it might be a banger. Based on Boston Teran‘s 1999 novel of the same name, “God Is A Bullet” follows detective Bob Hightower as he infiltrates a cult that kidnapped his daughter and murdered his ex-wife with the help of Case Hardin, a young woman who escaped the cult. To succeed, however, Hightower and Hardin must seek help from the mysterious Ferryman and avoid the clutches of the cult’s maniacal leader.
Sound intriguing enough? Well, listen to the cast list for “God Is A Bullet.” Nikolaj Coster-Waldau plays Bob Hightower, Maika Monroe is Case Hardin, and Jamie Foxx is The Ferryman. Karl Glusman, who starred opposite Monroe last year in “Watcher,” plays the cult leader. Other cast members include January Jones, Paul Johannson, and David Thornton.
On top of that, Patriot Pictures and XYZ Films team up for Cassavetes’ new film, their fourth collaboration together. Check out their previous three films together to get a sense of what to expect from “God Is A Bullet.” Patriot & XYZ did Justin Benson & Aaron Moorehead‘s trippy 2019 film “Synchronic” with Jamie Dornan and Anthony Mackie, 2020’s “Cut Throat City” with Ethan Hawke and Wesley Snipes, and Sion Sono‘s 2021 English-language debut “Prisoners Of The Ghostland” with Nic Cage.
Wayward Entertainment joins XYZ and Patriot Picture for the film’s release, their first as a company. Former Revolution Studios Ceo Vince Totino and former Orion Pictures head John Hegeman launched the upstart studio last year: Nick Frost‘s upcoming horror film “Svalta” with his buddy Simon Pegg is their first production. So if that film and “God Is A Bullet” are any indication, Wayward Entertainment wants to spearhead a new era in genre filmmaking.
Cassavetes sounds thrilled about his upcoming film’s release. “I’ve been trying to tell this great story for the last 18+ years,” the director said in a press statement. “It’s tough, violent, has two flawed and fantastic characters, and absolutely pulls no punches. I love it! There’s nothing else out there like it, not even close!”
That’s high praise, albeit from the director himself. But “God Is A Bullet” indeed sounds fantastic. After the film hits theaters on June 23, it hits digital on July 11. Expect a trailer for this one soon.
