'Soho Sins': Director Im Sang-Soo Reportedly Looking At Hugh Jackman Or Brad Pitt To Star In His English-Language Debut

If you’re a fan of Korean films, you’ve probably heard of filmmaker Im Sang-soo. He’s been selected to compete for the Palme d’Or twice by the Cannes Film Festival (and a third selection happened last year in the COVID-canceled fest). He’s the writer-director behind a number of high-profile features over the past 20 years. And apparently, he’s on the verge of making his Hollywood, English-language debut.

According to Yonhap News, Im Sang-soo is developing his Hollywood debut feature, “Soho Sins.” The film is said to be an adaptation of the novel of the same name by author Richard Vine about the murder of a woman who is part of a golden couple in the world of the art scene in New York City. And perhaps best of all, it is being reported that Im is considering actors Hugh Jackman and Brad Pitt as potential stars for the feature film.

Obviously, thanks to the record-breaking success of Bong Joon Ho, it’s never been a better time for a Korean filmmaker to attempt to make a Hollywood debut. And if you’re Im Sang-soo and you’re able to land someone on the caliber of Jackman or Pitt to lead your film, that’s almost a guaranteed success. Both Jackman and Pitt are at the top of the acting pile, with awards consideration and blockbuster box office all over their filmography.

Im Sang-soo is no stranger to acclaim, however. As mentioned, he’s probably best known for his films “The Housemaid” in 2010 and “The Taste of Money” in 2012, which along with his most recent feature, last year’s “Heaven: To the Land of Happiness,” were selected as part of the Cannes Film Festival. Other films that Im has helmed include “Tears,” “The Good Lawyer’s Wife,” and “The President’s Last Bang.”

Obviously, it’s far too early to know when we might see “Soho Sins” arrive at a festival or in theaters, but the report claims that pre-production on the feature could begin as early as this summer.
