Ready or not, the fifth entry in the “Jurassic Park” franchise, “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” is set to hit theaters this week. With the first “Jurassic World” breaking records at the box office, many are predicting a huge weekend for the dinosaur epic. But ‘Fallen Kingdom’ wouldn’t have nearly as big of an opening if it was R-rated. So, Universal was smart enough to make sure director J.A. Bayona kept it PG-13. And according to the director, that took some skill.

In one of the scenes in “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,” a character gets bitten by a dinosaur. I know, I know, it’s a “Jurassic Park” film where a human gets killed by a dinosaur. So shocking! However, Bayona described to CinemaBlend just how thoughtful he had to be when filming a scene that could push the film into R-rating territory:
“You know what I’m learning, when you do these kinds of movies, you know, when it needs to be PG-13, there are certain red lines that you cannot cross. For example, we knew that we couldn’t show much human blood. So for example, there’s a moment when you can see a dinosaur biting the arm off a man, and we designed the scene in order to make it very effective, but without showing any blood. It’s kind of fun when you do that, you try to find a way of making what you really want to do, in order to provoke that effective feeling, but without crossing the red line.”
So those gore lovers that were hoping for spurting arteries and tons of blood, “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” isn’t the film for you.
Another scene that was altered in the final film is due to a completely different reason, but is controversial, nonetheless. During an AOL Build interview, actress Daniella Pineda describes a scene that was cut that she really wishes would have made it into the final product. In the film, her character is Dr. Zia Rodriguez, a paleo-veterinarian. However, there was more to her character that was left out.
“I look at Chris and I’m like: ‘Yeah, square jaw, good bone structure, tall, muscles,’” Pineda said. “‘I don’t date men, but if I did, it would be you. It would gross me out, but I’d do it.’ I love that I’m looking at Chris Pratt, the hottest guy in the world, and I’m like, ‘It would gross me out, but I guess I would do it!’ It was also cool, because it was a little insight into my character. But they cut it.”
As you might imagine, this reveal hasn’t been well-received by those who feel that LGBTQ characters don’t get a fair shake in films today. Unfortunately, this scene was probably just cut for time, as the film clocks in well over 2 hours.
So, what do you think? Do you wish Pineda’s character had her moment? Or do you want the “Jurassic Park” franchise to step into R-rated territory? Let us know!
