You may have forgotten, but last summer it was announced that "The Hurt Locker" and "Zero Dark Thirty" team Kathryn Bigelow and Mark Boal were developing a movie about POW Bowe Bergdahl, with Megan Ellison backing the project. Not much else has been heard since, but it looks like the picture is now taking priority for Bigelow.
Over at Deadline, it has been revealed the untitled movie will be her next picture, and studios are expected to start taking a serious look at it. The movie will tell the intriguing tale of Bergdahl, the U.S. soldier who was kidnapped by the Taliban after wandering off his base, and held captive for five years. When he was released last summer, Bergdahl made headlines around the world, with the curious circumstances around the event providing lots of fodder for speculation. But as this movie moves forward, what is going on with "Triple Frontier"?
The multilingual, "Traffic"-esque tale, set in the notorious, crime-ridden border region between Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay, has been developing for years. There are a ton of big name actors linked or rumored at various points, but nothing has wound up sticking. The movie is still set up at Paramount, but a few years back, they weren’t keen on the high budget. Last year, producer Charles Roven told us it was on the "backburner." And now the word is that the movie has been "pushed to the side" in favor of the Bergdahl pic. So, we’ll just have to keep waiting for that one.
Meanwhile, it should be noted that Fox Searchlight also has a Bergdahl movie brewing, but not much has been heard on that one either since last year. So it seems Bigelow and Boal are getting ahead of the competition with their version. Hopefully, more concrete news isn’t too far away.
