‘Happiest Season’: Kristen Stewart Explains Why Seeing Lesbian Women In A Typical Rom-Com Is "Exhilarating & Freeing"

Kristen Stewart doesn’t want you to watch the upcoming film, “Happiest Season” and expect anything more than a typical rom-com. While gleefully describing a film as a standard rom-com might elicit groans from film fans, it’s the exact reason why people should be incredibly excited for the upcoming film directed by Clea DuVall.

Speaking to EW, Stewart spoke about the upcoming rom-com “Happiest Season,” which puts a relatively unique spin on the classic tropes of a rom-com. Instead of the two leads in the film being a hapless man and the girl of his dreams (or vice versa), this time the relationship at the center of the Christmas film is between two women. Though this might be a huge departure for a tried and true, overwhelmingly hetero film genre, “The Happiest Season” doesn’t break the mold too much. And that’s on purpose.

“I grew up watching and loving conventional movies like this,” said Stewart. “Seeing [marginalized] people loving each other in the middle of something that’s so standardized was really exhilarating and freeing. There’s a lack of confusion and generalization Clea brings [as a queer woman]. I want people to see that two girls in love is just so fun.”

She added, “You’re not watching [‘Happiest Season’] and going, ‘God, what’s going to happen to them, because the world is scary?’ You already know. It’s a fucking rom-com holiday movie. It’ll work out. And you want to see how it does. It’s relieving, allowing yourself to breathe. It’s a new feeling.”

Joining Stewart in the cast of DuVall’s film are Mackenzie Davis, who plays the actress’ love interest, and Dan Levy, best known for his role in ‘Schitt’s Creek.” DuVall co-wrote the feature with Mary Holland. “Happiest Season” is expected to arrive on November 25, just in time for people to sit back and enjoy a steady stream of holiday-themed rom-coms.

Update: Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) and Hulu announced today that the streaming platform has acquired U.S. rights to “The Happiest Season” which will now debut as a Hulu Original film on Wednesday, November 25.
