Luca Guadagnino Reveals Setting For 'Call Me By Your Name' Sequel

If you thought you were enraptured by the world of “Call My By Your Name,” you’ve got nothing on director Luca Guadagnino. The filmmaker, who saw his universally adored romance score four Oscar nominations this morning, spent much of the awards season talking up sequel possibilities. In fact, he’s tossed out the idea of making as many as five, pointing to Michael Apted’s “Up” series and Francois] Truffaut‘s Antoine Doinel movies as inspirations. Now, he’s got an idea about where the time period for the next movie might leap to.

The film as you know it now takes place in 1983, “somewhere in Northern Italy,” and for Guadagnino the next obvious point to catch up with Elio and Oliver would be nearly a decade later.

“I think the next chapter it will be happening right after the fall of Berlin wall and that great shift that was the end of Russia, of the USSR, sorry. And we’ll see people leaving home and going in the world. That’s what I can say for now,” he teased to Collider.

But that’s not all. The filmmaker is also keen to keep Sufjan Stevens — himself nominated for Best Original Song for “Mystery Of Love” — in the creative mix for any followups. “I will ask him to do the sequels as well for sure,” he said.

As the awards season run continues for “Call Me By Your Name,” I’m sure Guadagnino will have more to say about what’s next for Elio and Oliver. If you haven’t seen the film already, track down your nearest arthouse immediately.
