Lynne Ramsay Recently Wrote A New 'Epic Environmental Horror' Script & Dreams Of Making A Comedy

Lynne Ramsay is one of the most acclaimed and unique filmmakers working today. And with her previous films, “We Need to Talk About Kevin” and most recently, “You Were Never Really Here,” the filmmaker is no stranger to the darker side of life and people. So, it makes perfect sense that horror might be in her future, even though the idea of a straight up jump-scare fest is probably not Ramsay’s style.

Speaking to the British Independent Film Awards, Ramsay talked “You Were Never Really Here,” but also gave some hints as to what the future might hold for the filmmaker. And apparently, while she’s been doing what seems like a year’s worth of press for the film, Ramsay has gone ahead and written a brand-new script for a horror film.

“Well, I wrote 160 pages of a script just after doing all the press for ‘You Were Never Really Here,’ because it’s hard to keep talking about the same films,” Ramsay said. “But I was really inspired by making this film, so I’ve started writing this epic environmental horror thing. [Laughs]”

She continued, “I don’t know what it is yet, I just kept writing and didn’t look back. But I’m working on a few other projects as well. They’re all quite exciting, but they’re just in the writing process at the moment.”

“Epic environmental horror thing” sounds exactly like something that Ramsay would concoct. And if her filmography is any indication of what fans might expect from her take on horror, then we’re in for a hell of a treat. However, it’s that expectation that the filmmaker is also trying to avoid. She doesn’t want to just be known as the “dark” filmmaker.

When asked what the future might hold for her career, the one genre she wants to tackle doesn’t have any horrific elements to it. “I want every film to be different. I’d love to make a comedy. People go ‘Oh, your work’s so dark.’ I’m like, ‘Is it?’ Because I always put some kind of comedy elements as well. [Laughs],” said the filmmaker. “You’re always exploring as a filmmaker, y’know? But it takes a while to make films, unfortunately. Especially if you write them as well.”

So, it doesn’t appear we’re going to get a new Lynne Ramsay film in 2019, however, she has some ideas cooking. We might see her take on horror, or perhaps even a comedy. One thing is for sure – it will be a film worth checking out.
