Marc Webb Confirmed To Direct 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' (Andrew Garfield Will Return Too, Duh)

nullThere were rumblings all summer that Marc Webb wouldn't return to direct the sequel to "The Amazing Spider-Man" for a variety of reasons ranging from the reportedly slightly troubled post-production, which saw a lot of material get snipped, to contractual obligations at Fox getting in the way, and more chatter that he would have to sign his soul over to Sony. But whatever transpired, the studio has faith in the helmer as they have announced he is officially back on board to helm "The Amazing Spider-Man 2." And oh yeah, Andrew Garfield is back as Peter Parker as well, because, duh.

The followup was on the books even before the first movie hit theaters, with "Transformers" dudes Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman hired to pen the script, and a release date already on the calendar. "The Amazing Spider-Man" was a success, though maybe not quite what Sony was hoping for. The reboot was the lowest earner domestically for any of the studio's Spider-Man movies to date, doing pretty much double the business overseas. And all added up, the worldwide tally is still the lowest of any of Raimi films.

That being said, it's not trailing the Raimi films by much, and there is no doubt this one will keep the money rolling in for a while yet too. So now let's start speculating about the villain — Sinister Six maybe? Anyone you want to see? [THR]
